LO4.2: Be able to record cinematic quality footage
MERIT
In our rushes for our short film we have limited number of characters which is a convention of a short film as it makes it easier for people to understand and keep up with since the story is compressed into a short amount of time. Another convention we include is the reveal where we reveal to the audience that our character has dissociative identity disorder. This keeps the film interesting for the audience and allows us to start the film with a slight air of mystery. Since it is a short film it would have a small budget if we were to make it professionally since the film is short, it won't take as much time or equipment to film as it would if it was a full length film meaning that the budget would be smaller. our film is targeted more toward a niche audience like many short films are since short films are generally focused on one specific topic rather than multiple more generic topics like the majority of full length films are which could be to do with the fact that they cos a lot more to make so they need to ensure that many people will watch in order to gain a profit.
The genre of our short film is psychological drama. In order for our film to meet the conventions of similar films and be recognisable as this genre, we used shot types such as POV shots and over the shoulder POV shots to replicate those we had seen most often while researching this genre. I controlled the ISO in my shots in order to make the light levels artificially lighter or darker. This is good for the drama genre since since we have the ability to make the shots darker, in order to make the shot more eerie or glum to match the tone and atmosphere of the scene.
In one of the shots we focussed on the clipboard to draw the viewers attention to it. The way that we did this was that we set up the camera with a portrait lens and changed the settings on the camera to have a low aperture which allows for a shallow depth of field in the shot. this links to the genre as it will be a close up which shows detail, this is typical for the psychological drama genre as they rely on the small details.
